200 firefighters respond to multi-car blaze in New York City-shopping mall, parking garage

Several cars were on fire in a garage at Kings Plaza Shopping Mall in Brooklyn.


At least 17 people, mostly firefighters, were reportedly injured Monday after several vehicles caught fire in a shopping mall parking garage in New York City, sending plumes of black smoke into the air.

At least 15 firefighters and two other people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the New York City Fire Department said.

#FDNY members are active on the scene of a 6 alarm fire in 5100 Kings Plaza in #Brooklyn. There are currently 2 non-life-threatening injuries to citizens and 15 non-life-threatening injuries to the Fire brigade reported.

The massive fire was reported at Kings Plaza Mall in Brooklyn just before 9 a.m. The fire on the second floor of the parking garage quickly escalated, with more than 200 firefighters respond to the scene within an hour.

“Kings Plaza is currently closed. Multiple cars on fire in the garage and smoke. FIREFIGHTERS on the scene. Avoid the area,” a spokesman from the shopping centre tweeted.

Photos and videos of people in the area showed thick, black smoke overwhelming the area.

Officials told Fox News that the fire marshals will be investigating the fire, once under control.
