2 students killed, gunman dead after shooting at New Mexico high school

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office said that there is an active shooter at Aztec High School in New Mexico.

Two students were killed when a gunman opened fire on a northern New Mexico high school Thursday morning, law enforcement officials said.

The suspected gunman is killed, a spokesman for the New Mexico State Police told Fox News. It is unclear how the shooter died or what the motive for the attack may be.

Aztec High School, which is located in the Four Corners of the region and near the Navajo Nation, was evacuated after a period of in the lock. The authorities said that they cleared the buildings of the school, and the students were boarding buses to another location where they could be reunited with their parents.

A law enforcement official and a Navajo Nation spokesperson said that more than a dozen others were injured during the incident, but it was not immediately clear how they were hurt.

“It is tragic when our children are harmed in violent way, especially on school campuses. We extend our condolences to the families that are harmed,” Russell Begaye, president of the Navajo Nation, said in a press release.

It was not immediately clear if the shooting happened inside or outside the school.

On Facebook, law enforcement officials asked people to “avoid the area”, while the authorities secured the scene.

Farmington Municipal Schools wrote on Facebook that all schools in the district went into precautionary lockdown due to the incident.

“We have no reason to think that there is a threat in Farmington at this time, but we take these advance measures to secure all the schools. Your students’ safety is our primary concern,” the statement said.

In nearby Bloomfield, said the police of the local schools were also on lockdown as a precaution.

Federal agents and state police are investigating the shooting.
